Across the world girls are fighting for a change in dress code. Simple things like ripped jeans or tank tops or even leggings can send a young girl to the principal's office, which can lead to even worse consequence like being suspended or expelled.
In Florida a high school a student got in-school suspension because she was wearing ripped jeans. The students mother went to Facebook and wrote that a school official told her daughter that she needs to think about her affect on the boys around her? Why should a girl have to think about that? Another student in high school faced a problem even worse problem than the last. A junior at Braden River High School named Lizzy Martinez was pulled out of class to be told that she was “ distracting the male students.” We women can go through so much growing up like being body shamed and trying to look perfect and hurting ourselves. Why do we let Society tell us we have to be a certain way or dress a certain way?

Have you ever been so warms in your fuzzy blanket that you don’t want to move? Well that’s happened to me.
One cold Christmas Morning the white show was softly laying on the cold winter ground. The laughs of joy and happiness echoed through my decorated house. My family was finally all together as ready to create unforgettable memories. We all gathered together on the hard stairs to take a family picture. After we got the perfect picture my two brothers and my two sisters rushed over to the stockings. I was excited to open the stockings but they were wild about opening them. We all took turns to carefully open the small gifts that were stuffed in the stockings. Giggles and smiles filled the room. After that it was time to open the big presents. We all headed over to the living room and we all sat down on the comfy couch while we snuggled in our soft and colorful blankets. The fireplace crackled as we started ripping the boxes and bags open. There were presents everywhere along with the red and white wrapping paper. Hours passed and it was time to eat lunch! Cold meat, cranberry sauce, and stuffing pulled onto the bowls and pans. We said “bye” and “be safe” as the door slammed close after we were finished eating. I slowly walked over to the couch and thought of my family, the perfect family. Adolescents care about the world around them and have a lot to say about it. This is a forum to share some of these ideas.
By Natalie B. and Blaze F. On Friday, March 8, Jeanne Moran visited Central York Middle School to make a presentation to Team T learners. She is the author of Risking Exposure and A Path Divided. She presented on the research she had done to become a historical fiction author and shared information about her second book, A Path Divided. Her historical fiction books are about a 14-year-old girl named Sophie Adler who lived in the time of the Holocaust. As our article said before this one, we are learning about the Holocaust, and this enhanced our comprehension of the topic. We had a chance after the presentation to meet Jeanne Moran and get our books signed. Overall, it was an enhancing experience that taught us more about the Holocaust. By Natalie B.
Team T has entered the Holocaust unit in ELA, and many believe it to be the most exciting and interesting unit. We learn about the Holocaust through fictional books such as Prisoner B-3087 and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. We read these books in literature circles, and engage in conversations about our books with our group every week. We are currently in week three of our historical fiction books. Team T ELA teachers also have us do activities to show us what the Holocaust was like, such as stations, poetry, etc. This unit opens our eyes to what the Jews in the Holocaust went through, and what concentration camps were like in that time period. by Blaze F.
During a learner's time at CYMS they will get to take part in many different specials, one of which if Family Consumer Science in seventh grade. The name sounds complex and elaborate, but it’s really just cooking! Of course, there are other aspects of dietary needs and food safety, but many students believe that cooking is the best part. The family science teacher, Ms. Hopkins, does a great job of having the students prepare food weekly. The learners have most recently made a family science favorite, cinnamon twists! While making the food the students learn how to properly prepare food, how to be sanitary in the kitchen, and most importantly how to clean up. When your child comes home from school, ask them to cook a meal for you. After all, it is an assignment for the class! by Blaze F.
Mr. Lawson, history teacher on Team T, has taken segments of history and assigned his learners to tell a story. The students have chosen a genre, made a plot diagram, and taken off. They have modified a part of history, and turned it into an adventure. To enhance the “magic” of it, all the students are using legos to tell the tale. First, the students pick a background, that fits their story. Next, they build small buildings and props by hand. Finally, the learners select accessories from Mr. Lawson’s expansive selection to make an astounding photo. It seems that the story of history will continue to be told for years to come. The project below depicts the Epic of Gilgamesh, who was believed to be a King of Mesopotamia, around 2500 B.C. By Blaze F. and Natalie B. Mr. Lawson: Mr. Lawson is the history teacher on Team T. Team T is a great team! There are so many possibilities, and interesting activities that we do to help us learn. One of my favorites things we have done recently is the poetry boot camp; it goes through some stations, and helps us learn through different types of methods. For example, we filled out the blanks for the similes, then found them in a word search, and created our own. One class I really like is ELA, because instead of doing tests all the time, learning is fun and creative.
One other class I really like is Science because we go through these folders on Schoology, and the folders are like a menu at a restaurant. It’s super fun going through these folders, we get options on what we want to do. On Team T we get to be self-paced, so we aren’t rushed. We get time in class to do our work, while in a positive environment. -Mila |
