Math - A subject that counts! Math is a subject that you either love or hate. I decided to take a closer look at how people on Team N feel about Math. So, I asked around... "Do you like math and why?" "What particular topics do you like in Math, and why?" Dylan K. said “I do like math. It gives me a challenge sometimes. I like Chapter 3 of CPM. It has been the only chapter to give me a challenge so far.” Mr. Hameloth, the Team N student teacher, is a college student and replied “Yes. I think math is important in all aspects of life. My favorite topic would be functions, because they made sense, or were very logical.” See? No matter if you’re in college or elementary school, Math can be very fun and helpful. It gives you a way to challenge yourself, or learn something new. So regardless of how you feel about math, it can always give you a chance to learn new things. #challenges -Zak Science - A closer look Science is a fun class on Team N. We do a lot of cool things and currently we are working with microscopes. The microscopes are very interesting especially when you find something you’ve never seen before. But, we don’t just look through them. We have also been learning about the microscope, how it works, and its ability to magnify samples several hundred times. We have already analyzed paramecium, amoebas, and euglenas. While discussing certain unicellular organisms, I asked a good friend a quizzical question about the microscope unit, “what was your favorite sample to study so far?” Aris responded, “I have been really interested in science all throughout the year, but so far I really enjoyed learning about the euglenas.“ According to our Science lab manual, “Euglena are tiny protists with characteristics of both plant and animal cells. Some species are capable of photosynthesis and others feed on bacteria.” Well, that about sums up the Mr. Ginter “science experience.” -Kallie #microscopes Tech Ed - Engineering for the Future I find Tech Ed to be a fun class for two reasons. First, I like constructing things and secondly Mr. Ressel is a great teacher. The class is enjoyable because Mr. Ressel has the perfect teaching attitude. He is not too strict, although most people disagree. But, he makes sure we know all the safety precautions. There are many rules to be aware of when working with tools. Mr. Ressel also tells great stories that always relate to the lesson. It is crazy how many of his stories involve a narrow escape from death. Yet, you know he is always going to get out okay. These stories end up making the lesson more relevant. Two of my favorite stories include a near death experience during a tornado and a methane-fueled fireball. In conclusion, Tech Ed is very fun and Mr. Ressel makes it that way. The other day I sought out Mr. Ressel and asked about his journey toward teaching. “What inspired you to be a teacher, specifically Tech Ed?” He responded, "In my junior year of college, I had no intention of being a teacher, but I went out to a school in Landisville for a college assignment. It was a life skills classroom, I didn't know what to expect. So me and my friends taught students how to build Conestoga Wagon night lights, when one student said “Oh my gosh it works!”, then I was hooked." -Aidan #safetyfirst Mr. Potts - An Educational Twist I prefer to keep a neutral tone, just a person who doesn’t take sides, and while I cherish every teacher, and class equally, I will for sure remember Mr. Potts LA class. He creates a quirky and fun yet educational environment where I can take in corny jokes and “original,” cleverly-thought out song lyrics. He is always helpful, and never fails to give most of us who appreciate a decent cheesy joke a chance laugh. One time in particular he decided that he was going to help us out by convincing Mr. Ginter, our relaxed science teacher, into moving the test back another day so he could help us study and get our preliminary jitters out. He made us repeatedly practice with different strategies, and made up this "Harry the Hydra" character to help relieve the stress. Let’s just say his paramecia came up with some pretty funny quotes related to his functions. One of my favorite Harry the Hydra quotes was “Don’t confuse me with an octopus because my tentacles are LIT!" Mr. Potts is also great when it comes to helping me with my anxiety, a struggle I’ve been dealing with since 5th grade. He is very understanding when it comes to my mental health. Overall, all the teachers on Team N are amazing, with their unique elements combined, but Mr. Potts has a clever wit that really differentiates his class. Mr. Potts takes his students on an educational adventure, and at the end of the year, "if these students learn to love reading and writing, then I’ve done my job!" -Macy #quirky #harrythehydra History - Where the past meets the future History on Team N is a very important and fun time. And with the help of Mr. Hameloth, we have been able to learn a lot about ancient civilizations. Mr. Hameloth is a Student Teacher from Millersville University, and he really enjoys teaching and helping kids learn. Mr. H, as many people call him, is very comfortable as a teacher and makes sure everyone is on task and working to their best ability. I wanted to ask him a few questions about being a teacher. Q- “Why do you like teaching?” A- “Because I think everything I teach is important and I want to teach the future generation more about life and how to make connections to the past.” Q- “What is your favorite topic in history?” A- “Probably learning about the tank campaigns in World War 2. That’s probably the most interesting to me.” Mr. Hameloth is sadly leaving soon and graduating college. He will no longer be in Central Middle School, but we will remember him for being such a great teacher and leader. -Owen #studentteacher Mrs. Brown's Café - A Creative Blend There are many amazing teachers in this school that do many different things, but I have chosen to focus on one teacher, Mrs. Brown (Team N’s Language Arts Teacher). She is a big part of our team and she does so much for us. I asked Mrs. Brown a question about her café themed learning experience, "What is your favorite part about having different cafés?" She replied, “I started different cafés - Checkpoint Café, Custom Café and Readers Café because we do different types of activities for language arts.” Mrs. Brown also added that "students are motivated to complete tasks and meet educational goals because they can earn café points." The café points can eventually be cashed in for "treats." The treats include mini-cups of hot chocolate or a sensible snack. Mrs. Brown stated that "of course, the students do enjoy those cafe-themed prizes!" "However, my favorite part about the café theme is that it helps to create a relaxed, but focused, learning environment that encourages student success.” I think Mrs. Brown is a great teacher and she should keep doing an amazing job! -Kassidy #choices
