Below is a slideshow from the Young Women's Leadership Conference attended by 7th grade girls on October 16, 2018. For a complete article with more details about this event, visit the Special Events page. “Unapologetically be yourself, because the day you do this, it will not only set a fire in your past, but also light a spark in your future.” ~ Tori Wantz Math - A subject that counts! Math is a subject that you either love or hate. I decided to take a closer look at how people on Team N feel about Math. So, I asked around... "Do you like math and why?" "What particular topics do you like in Math, and why?" Dylan K. said “I do like math. It gives me a challenge sometimes. I like Chapter 3 of CPM. It has been the only chapter to give me a challenge so far.” Mr. Hameloth, the Team N student teacher, is a college student and replied “Yes. I think math is important in all aspects of life. My favorite topic would be functions, because they made sense, or were very logical.” See? No matter if you’re in college or elementary school, Math can be very fun and helpful. It gives you a way to challenge yourself, or learn something new. So regardless of how you feel about math, it can always give you a chance to learn new things. #challenges -Zak Science - A closer look Science is a fun class on Team N. We do a lot of cool things and currently we are working with microscopes. The microscopes are very interesting especially when you find something you’ve never seen before. But, we don’t just look through them. We have also been learning about the microscope, how it works, and its ability to magnify samples several hundred times. We have already analyzed paramecium, amoebas, and euglenas. While discussing certain unicellular organisms, I asked a good friend a quizzical question about the microscope unit, “what was your favorite sample to study so far?” Aris responded, “I have been really interested in science all throughout the year, but so far I really enjoyed learning about the euglenas.“ According to our Science lab manual, “Euglena are tiny protists with characteristics of both plant and animal cells. Some species are capable of photosynthesis and others feed on bacteria.” Well, that about sums up the Mr. Ginter “science experience.” -Kallie #microscopes Tech Ed - Engineering for the Future I find Tech Ed to be a fun class for two reasons. First, I like constructing things and secondly Mr. Ressel is a great teacher. The class is enjoyable because Mr. Ressel has the perfect teaching attitude. He is not too strict, although most people disagree. But, he makes sure we know all the safety precautions. There are many rules to be aware of when working with tools. Mr. Ressel also tells great stories that always relate to the lesson. It is crazy how many of his stories involve a narrow escape from death. Yet, you know he is always going to get out okay. These stories end up making the lesson more relevant. Two of my favorite stories include a near death experience during a tornado and a methane-fueled fireball. In conclusion, Tech Ed is very fun and Mr. Ressel makes it that way. The other day I sought out Mr. Ressel and asked about his journey toward teaching. “What inspired you to be a teacher, specifically Tech Ed?” He responded, "In my junior year of college, I had no intention of being a teacher, but I went out to a school in Landisville for a college assignment. It was a life skills classroom, I didn't know what to expect. So me and my friends taught students how to build Conestoga Wagon night lights, when one student said “Oh my gosh it works!”, then I was hooked." -Aidan #safetyfirst Mr. Potts - An Educational Twist I prefer to keep a neutral tone, just a person who doesn’t take sides, and while I cherish every teacher, and class equally, I will for sure remember Mr. Potts LA class. He creates a quirky and fun yet educational environment where I can take in corny jokes and “original,” cleverly-thought out song lyrics. He is always helpful, and never fails to give most of us who appreciate a decent cheesy joke a chance laugh. One time in particular he decided that he was going to help us out by convincing Mr. Ginter, our relaxed science teacher, into moving the test back another day so he could help us study and get our preliminary jitters out. He made us repeatedly practice with different strategies, and made up this "Harry the Hydra" character to help relieve the stress. Let’s just say his paramecia came up with some pretty funny quotes related to his functions. One of my favorite Harry the Hydra quotes was “Don’t confuse me with an octopus because my tentacles are LIT!" Mr. Potts is also great when it comes to helping me with my anxiety, a struggle I’ve been dealing with since 5th grade. He is very understanding when it comes to my mental health. Overall, all the teachers on Team N are amazing, with their unique elements combined, but Mr. Potts has a clever wit that really differentiates his class. Mr. Potts takes his students on an educational adventure, and at the end of the year, "if these students learn to love reading and writing, then I’ve done my job!" -Macy #quirky #harrythehydra History - Where the past meets the future History on Team N is a very important and fun time. And with the help of Mr. Hameloth, we have been able to learn a lot about ancient civilizations. Mr. Hameloth is a Student Teacher from Millersville University, and he really enjoys teaching and helping kids learn. Mr. H, as many people call him, is very comfortable as a teacher and makes sure everyone is on task and working to their best ability. I wanted to ask him a few questions about being a teacher. Q- “Why do you like teaching?” A- “Because I think everything I teach is important and I want to teach the future generation more about life and how to make connections to the past.” Q- “What is your favorite topic in history?” A- “Probably learning about the tank campaigns in World War 2. That’s probably the most interesting to me.” Mr. Hameloth is sadly leaving soon and graduating college. He will no longer be in Central Middle School, but we will remember him for being such a great teacher and leader. -Owen #studentteacher Mrs. Brown's Café - A Creative Blend There are many amazing teachers in this school that do many different things, but I have chosen to focus on one teacher, Mrs. Brown (Team N’s Language Arts Teacher). She is a big part of our team and she does so much for us. I asked Mrs. Brown a question about her café themed learning experience, "What is your favorite part about having different cafés?" She replied, “I started different cafés - Checkpoint Café, Custom Café and Readers Café because we do different types of activities for language arts.” Mrs. Brown also added that "students are motivated to complete tasks and meet educational goals because they can earn café points." The café points can eventually be cashed in for "treats." The treats include mini-cups of hot chocolate or a sensible snack. Mrs. Brown stated that "of course, the students do enjoy those cafe-themed prizes!" "However, my favorite part about the café theme is that it helps to create a relaxed, but focused, learning environment that encourages student success.” I think Mrs. Brown is a great teacher and she should keep doing an amazing job! -Kassidy #choices Team N is not just any ordinary middle school team. Team N is very important to many people, not just myself. The teachers on Team N are a major contributor to the experience and academics of my middle school days. The teachers strive to teach you as much as you can possibly imagine to prepare you for eighth grade and throughout your whole life. Every Team N teacher cares about what’s best for you. That’s why they push and motivate us each and every day to make us better than the day before. Team N also has many opportunities for meeting new people. Team N is a part of the word “Panthers.” “Panthers” means to show respect, responsibility, and treat others politely. Team N is a part of this amazing middle school, and that’s what Team N means to me. #teamn #amazing
-Owen Team N can mean many things. For me, it means learning. Even though we aren’t even halfway through the school year, I’ve learned almost more than I learned halfway through last year! The teachers are always willing to help you, and always make sure that you learn. We have good ways of learning, that make hard or annoying things easy, such as TDA's, science tests, or even mapping. I am glad I was put on Team N because they have taught us to be proud of who we are. Team N is definitely a great place to be a "panther." #pantherproud -Zak Yesterday, my teacher asked me the hardest question I’ve been given this school year. "What does Team N stand for?" Now, I know this must seem simple in the grand scheme of things because to people not sharing this terrific team with me think it’s just another letter that helps spell out the word PANTHER. But, to me, it’s so much more. Team N is a fun and independent team designed to help kids have some exploration in their education and to get prepared for the real world. The teachers are amazing to add to the mix. Mr. Ginter is laid back, Mr. Cummings is the designated comic relief, Mr. Potts belts out his “own” songs like no one else, and Mrs. Brown and Ms. Richter put up with my knock knock jokes. The staff is supportive of furthering our education and allowing us to make mistakes, which creates a real learning curve. Panther pride is spread cheerfully throughout the team, and we are always heavily encouraged to participate in school goings on and spirit days. Overall, it is a great and truly inspiring team that has helped me learn what being prideful is really about, and how middle school isn’t so terrifying once you get the hang of it. "Team N"... two words I'm not ashamed to say. -Macy #pantherproud I say that Team N is very unique to me compared to the other teams (in my opinion). I know, I know... everyone says that, but every team has their differences. Like the team down the hall (Team H), has both 7th and 8th graders! What I am saying is that Team N is a melting pot of students, all from different backgrounds. There is no major bullying, everyone gets along, and everyone’s happy and suited for each other. For example, at lunch, everyone gets along and goes to other tables to meet, share ideas, and to hang out. Another bonus is that the teaching quality is awesome. The teachers aren’t strict or bossy, yet they don’t let the students do anything they want. I think that is amazing, as all the students get the education they want. Finally, just the whole mood and “vibe” on this team is positive. The teachers always wave and smile at you when you come in, and a good mood in the morning sets your day off right. -Aidan #teamn Team N means a lot me me because it is a cool team with rules but it can also be super fun. Team N has its ups and downs, but somehow it always ends up being something cool or funny. Team N has a lot of work but the work is fun. The work we get is never work that can’t get done and it's also interesting. When I got Team N I thought to myself, “Wow, Team N. I never imagined that I would get this team. I can’t imagine what homework and assignments we will have to do.” Yes all my thoughts were negative because I thought that this team was going to be super hard, we would have a lot of work, and have to study for difficult tests. But, never did I think this was going to be an AMAZING team. All of the teachers are super nice, even if you have missing work unless it’s been missing for awhile. Not only is the work fun but so are the teachers, students, and yes, even the homework. Team N is such a great team and I’m glad I’m on it. That is what Team N means to me. -Kallie #amazing Team N means a lot to me, whether it is the people, like my best friend Kallie or the great teachers. Everything is worth the work and dedication that everyone must bring. Even though something may be difficult or stressful the teachers help you push through and get to the end. I believe that Team N is not perfect, but then again nothing ever should be perfect. Without the bumps and bruises we go through, we would never have learned to do a lot of things we do. This means a lot to me because it tells me that everyone and everything messes up sometimes and that instead of breaking down and running away you should go and make that opportunity yours by fixing it and looking at the positive side of things. What Team N means to me are many things. It could be the way we learn or the people that help us. I know for sure that Team N is important to me no matter how bad or frustrating things may be we will always stay together through thick and thin. -Kassidy #opportunity |
